Oʻahu is known as The Heart of Hawaiʻi, and for good reason. The island carries one of the richest cultural legacies in the Pacific.  Early Polynesian wayfinders settled here as far back as 300 to 600 CE, navigating the open ocean by stars, wind, and wave. Their descendants developed a society rooted in ʻohana (extended family), deep reverence for the natural world, and living traditions including hula, mele (chant and song), taro farming, and celestial navigation.

 

Hula and oli (chant) are not performance art here. They are living forms of oral history, used to honor ancestors, mark sacred occasions, and pass knowledge across generations. Aulani weaves these traditions into the guest experience thoughtfully and intentionally, offering cultural storytelling and programming created in collaboration with Native Hawaiian practitioners.
